Dudley Taft’s “Left For Dead” Album Review

Big, fat and loud are descriptives that got slapped around on the début album of Seattle’s rock and blues singer/songwriter Dudley Taft; pretty, soft and conservatively wired listeners need not apply. “Left For Dead” is stacked with the Texan overtones of ZZ Top and SRV yet with an untypical innovative style and approach that gives this album the meat and potatoes to get a listener on the sonic train tracks and dancing till they pull into the station. There is no question that Taft, his band and this album have passed through the deep mojo fires of the Seattle music culture infecting a blend of blues standards like Willy Dixon’s “Back Door Man” and “Seventh Son” and Taft’s original work like the album’s title track, “Left For Dead” which encapsulates the spirit of the NW blues with lyrics like “My body hit the mattress, but my soul hit the floor”. The first tune out the gate is Taft’s “Ain’t No Game” which had me heading for my leather pants, boots and ready for a ride and by the last tune, also a Taft original, “If You’ll Come Home” I had to wonder if I wasn’t listening to the next Billy Gibbons or Joe Bonamassa. If you are new to the name Dudley Taft, he is no upstart to say the least, he’s been rocking crowds for years with regional superstars Spike and the Impalers and it’s going to take a tornado to knock this showman off his game. So if it’s a feast of thick and beefy guitar tones or a stratospheric riff rock, blue note rocket ride this collection of NW styled blues tunes is a must have for any serious rock blues music collection.

“KEEPER OF THE FLAME” LEON HENDRIX CD review by KK Ryder

October 4th, 2008 by Gary Draper | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

Let’s strip the name, the exotic Cherokee chiseled looks of his older brother (only with longer hair) and you can’t escape certain qualities in that voice coming through with conviction. With strong powerful messages coming straight from the love in his heart and an art for keeping life real through his own style of music Leon and his power drivin’ band are rockin’ stages from Seattle to Vegas! Continuing through music… the Hendrix Legacy rides on! On the CD KEEPER OF THE FLAME there is an unmistakable quality in the voice and this time around… That voice belongs to none other than Jimi’s baby brother….Leon Hendrix. The messages that Leon spells out as the KEEPER OF THE FLAME, reflect passion and the true honesty that ribbon through the Hendrix Legend! Throughout KEEPER OF THE FLAME Leon welcomes the listener to a little “pow-wow!” As you sit on the branches of his family tree, simply sway in the breeze and feel free to just rock out..as he reveals story upon story of his true feelings… you can almost feel older brother Jimi Hendrix rocking out with him in spirit! The touching BLUE SEPTEMBER is a “heart warmer” it’s almost as if you…the listener are eves dropping in on a one-sided conversation between the two Brother’s Hendrix, as Leon pours out questions to his big brother about what it will be like when the two see each other in Heaven. Now don’t get me wrong…KEEPER OF THE FLAME is not only Hendrix Legacy drivin’ Leon also shows his Patriotic American pride on the cut FLIGHT 93 which starts off with the haunting melodic keyboard played brilliantly by Neil Kirkland and then Leon speaks from his Patriotic heart about his dedication to all the heroe’s on that dreadful day… as the band rips into the song with metal “balls to the wall force!” if music is truley the sound track of our lives you can almost sense at which point in the music the Heroes became…well, Heroes of FLIGHT 93! My choice track on the cd, really has nothing to do with being “Hendrix” at all, except maybe the “Cajun Gypsy” feel in the music which flows deep in the Hendrix blood from Leon and Jimi’s Mama’s side of the gene pool, It’s a track called VOODOO RIVER …and once again history is made…in leon’s own right…Hendrix style! May the “KEEPER OF THE FLAME” Blaze on into a bright future!

TWIN FALLS PARTY by Gary Draper

September 25th, 2008 by Gary Draper | No Comments | Filed in Music, Uncategorized

Awhile back I got a phone call from a friend, Roger Fisher. He said “I’m going to an awesome party Sunday and you’re invited.” I asked if it was cool to bring a friend? He said “sure,” so I called Vanessa and asked if she wanted to go. She said “Hell yes!” The party was at some property near Granite Falls owned by a very cool dude named Todd. When Vanessa and I arrived Sunday afternoon, the first things we saw were about 30 to 40 people, a lamb cooking over an open pit fire, and a beautiful private lake in the background. I said, “Oh yes, this is going to be great.” I knew some of the people there and greeted them, then introduced them to my friend Vanessa. The people that I didn’t know were quick to say “Hi” and were very friendly. We had a great time talking with everyone. You could really feel the love in the air. Such a great vibe. After eating some lamb (which was absolutely delicious), Roger, Mike Curley, and Steve Fossen got out their acoustic guitars and began to play and sing. Vanessa even joined in and sang a song with them. What a treat that was. They are all soooo talented. I felt really fortunate to be there and be a part of it. We had to leave after a few songs as I had to get back to Seattle to get caught up on video editing - seems to be a never ending task, but I enjoy it. Below are some pictures that I took at the party.
