Interview with model BOBBIE BROWN by Gina Lockhart

September 30th, 2008 by Gina Lockhart | 1 Comment | Filed in Music

This is an exlusive interview with Bobbie Brown - 1/06 for a website that I had which would include bands and models. It was not published but decided to release the interview with Bobbie’s blessings. I had the opportunity to contact Bobbie back then for the interview and was a pleasure to converse with and is still a pleasure to contact. She really is a down to earth woman. I look forward to another interview with her.

Tell me a little about yourself:
I’m clutzie, dorkie, laugh at myself and my own jokes, a good mother, funny, bossy, smart and ignorant at the same time, never a dull moment usually.

You are a published poet. What gives you that creative thought?
The poetry I’ve ever written has been on love and relationships and a lack thereof.

Talent Magazine January 2000

What woman do you look up to?
This will sound crazy, but my daughter, she was put on this earth to ground me. I swear I would be dead if it weren’t for her. She’s an old soul not to mention a literal genius, she’s so gifted, I’m very proud.

What do you like to do for fun?
Listen to Dane Cook, go see him perform live, or watch his DVD’s, pumpkin smashing, tease my daughter, go dancing, even prank phone calls.

What lipstick do you use?
Mac: glass

How do you see yourself to men and women seperately?
To men, I think overwhelming and uninterested. To women, sometimes intimidating, controlling, bossy, yet generous and friendly all at once.

Tell me a little bit about the autobigraphy you’re working on?
This year I was topic in three books released. Dave Navarro’s, Jenna Jameson’s, and Tommy Lee’s. I felt what better time than now to produce a retort if you will, yet self depricating and honest as well with humor of course.

Party was held at the L.A. Hard Rock Cafe 4/17/94

With Dave Navarro

What do you wear when going to bed?
Jammies that are beyond soft, like air, that smell like fabric softener.

What is your favorite fragrance?
Anything that smells edible

Tell a secret about yourself…..
I’m way more emotional and sensitive than I’d ever reveal.

Kent Morrill gives Tribute to the Legendary Roy Orbison

September 30th, 2008 by Rock The Blues Admin | No Comments | Filed in Blues News, Music

Rock The Blues own Nick Voegele was recently invited to a private DVD recording session at The Columbia Theatre’ where Kent Morrill of The Fabulous Wailers took stage. Donning the persona of the legendary Roy Orbison, Kent not only looked and sounded the part but it was hard to imagine that anyone in the audience was not sitting in front of Roy Orbison himself! The Fabulous Wailers who brought about change in the Northwest music scene with songs such as “Louie Loiue” and “Tall Cool One” themselves deserve a tribute, yet singer Kent Morrill gives an incredible tribute to Roy Orbison having at one time played with Roy. The session was hosted by the one and only Pat O’Day one of radio’s pioneering DJ’s who was both a pleasure to visit with and quit the comedian, we are looking forward to the release and to see more of Kent Morrill’s tribute to Roy Orbison along with his original songs in the future.

BILLY SHERWOOD of YES - At the Speed of Life - CD review by KK Ryder

September 26th, 2008 by Gary Draper | 4 Comments | Filed in Music

BILLY SHERWOOD of YES FAME HAS ARRIVED with a NEW CD “AT THE SPEED OF LIFE”
Yes fans, Progressive rock fans and fans of Billy Sherwood former member of YES and currently the lead singer, bass player for his new band CIRCA has arrived for you with His 3rd solo cd AT THE SPEED OF LIFE!

I felt Billy Sherwood’s 3rd solo cd AT THE SPEED OF LIFE coming straight through his mesmeric warm and gentle soul.

This cd takes you on a stereophonic journey that keeps the listener ALIVE AND WONDERING. Billy’s vocals and the tight harmonies are so incredible you almost feel as if you are listening to an actual YES cd and the syncopated rhythm is a real treat for the listener, the lyrics and the mood of the music seem to ask the listener questions that are thoughtful and tempt you into reaching inside of your own soul for answers that only you can answer about your own life.

As you are listening to the cd you can’t help thinking who are all of these great players, you check the liner notes to find that this is really a true solo project, Billy is playing all of the instruments, everything has that Sherwood vibe stamped on it, the phrasing of the lyrics and the music, carry the listener through from the beginning to the end and you can follow along with the words which is always a bonus!

The title track AT THE SPEED OF LIFE has qualities of universal instrumentation, I heard a little world beat flavor perhaps that of Eastern Indian reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir I also heard a little Chinese perhaps mixed with what sounded like even a tinge of a banjo? and if you listen closely you can almost hear the high pitched sounds that of a whale… representing the equality of how all living things really do travel AT THE SPEED OF LIFE.

SEEING THROUGH THE WALLS I found the music to be very dreamy giving the listener breathing room to reflect on their own life as you really are seeing through your own walls of silence.

IN MEMORY OF… is the only instrumental track which has an almost comforting feel intertwining both somber and optimistic moments of the actual feelings one battles with when losing a loved one. IN THE MAZE OF THE GARDEN Billy lays down a real funky flair to the bass line and rides it through the song with a staccato sort of rhythm. FACE THE DAWN has a lot of really positive messages which you must interpret for yourself as you live your own life…AT THE SPEED OF LIFE! AT THE SPEED OF LIFE is a true independent release, only available directly from Billy’s on line store: www. billysherwoodhq.com

TWIN FALLS PARTY by Gary Draper

September 25th, 2008 by Gary Draper | No Comments | Filed in Music, Uncategorized

Awhile back I got a phone call from a friend, Roger Fisher. He said “I’m going to an awesome party Sunday and you’re invited.” I asked if it was cool to bring a friend? He said “sure,” so I called Vanessa and asked if she wanted to go. She said “Hell yes!” The party was at some property near Granite Falls owned by a very cool dude named Todd. When Vanessa and I arrived Sunday afternoon, the first things we saw were about 30 to 40 people, a lamb cooking over an open pit fire, and a beautiful private lake in the background. I said, “Oh yes, this is going to be great.” I knew some of the people there and greeted them, then introduced them to my friend Vanessa. The people that I didn’t know were quick to say “Hi” and were very friendly. We had a great time talking with everyone. You could really feel the love in the air. Such a great vibe. After eating some lamb (which was absolutely delicious), Roger, Mike Curley, and Steve Fossen got out their acoustic guitars and began to play and sing. Vanessa even joined in and sang a song with them. What a treat that was. They are all soooo talented. I felt really fortunate to be there and be a part of it. We had to leave after a few songs as I had to get back to Seattle to get caught up on video editing - seems to be a never ending task, but I enjoy it. Below are some pictures that I took at the party.

CHUCK CANNON - LOVE AND MONEY - CD review by KK Ryder

September 25th, 2008 by Gary Draper | No Comments | Filed in Music

What do ya do if your Daddy is a Pentecostal preacher when you’re just a young boy in the church pew? You capture some of those Bible stories in your soul, listen to the Beatles and Johnny Cash turn to your rebel side…you grow up ,write songs for some pretty huge Country Stars, get awards and go in the studio to record your own CD’S co-written by yourself and your co-writing buddies! CHUCK CANNON LOVE AND MONEY is Chuck Cannon’s Follow up to GOD SHAPED HOLE which was a true to life brilliant creation in it’s own right, from the eye catching and thought provoking cover with the slightly tilted cross as if God Himself were scoping out what all His little Children were up to on this big blue marble called Earth, to the songs inside, that were also thought provoking and very truthful lyrics all rockin’ in their own special way. I highly recommend that CD and you will find more of my comments on itunes soon about GOD SHAPED HOLE, however, this review is about Cannon’s follow up, CHUCK CANNON LOVE AND MONEY appropriately titled. Cannon reveals both sides the Rebel and the God Lovin’ Soul searching songwriter with in him telling stories about…you guessed it LOVE AND MONEY!
A lot of this CD gave me those comforting goose bumps from the song choices to the detailed painting of the lyrics, not too mention every song relaxes nicely through and through with Cannon’s deep sexy and rich voice and shining, ribboning through are some pretty tasty backing vocals!
LOVE AND MONEY starts out with a short suspenseful instrumental that readies the listener for what is to come! Cannon makes sure to give it to you straight on two very different points of view songs about the Devil, and two of my very favorites were “swamp” rockers that immediately get your blood pumping called BET YO MAMA and the CHUCK JONES/CANNON co-write STRANGE (check out the you tube on STRANGE and you can read my comments and see Chuck rockin’ out acoustic style) the lyrics are tounge in cheek entertaining and the music is a great rocking match on both of them.
Cannon reveals a taste of his crooning sexier softer side on OUTTA THIS TOWN (co-written by MAC DAVIS and JEFFREY STEELE, LOVE ON YOU and also BEAUTIFUL GIRL which he penned with co-producer LARI WHITE. One song that you truly have to experience for yourself that made my goose bumps jump for joy was OH MY LORD and when you hear this song in its entirety you will understand why.
I love this CD and enjoy crusin down the road getting a little bit of life’s lesson’s along the way on LOVE AND MONEY CHUCK CANNON STYLE… way to go Chuck you have done it again two thumbs rockin way up high and a Ha-lay-lu ya to match here is the link to download these songs and read a bit more on CHUCK CANNON http://cdbaby.com/cd/chuckcannon2

Change Will Do You Good - by Bob Gassert

About My Album “Change Will Do You Good”

Category: music

Everyone needs to lay their emotions out on the table at least once in their life. Maybe its a method of moving on.
For me it was the need for truth and honesty.
As with all forms of Art It effects everyone differently.
I’ve heard everything from ( It changed my life in a good way ) to ( Not My Cup Of Tea ). Some of my most Favorite Music didn’t effect me at all at first . After about the third or fourth time I heard it. It hit me like a ton of Bricks (My God This is Brilliant and Beautiful) And I’ve loved them ever since. That’s why Radio is so powerful It makes you listen to those songs like it or not , Then one day you say Wow That song is really good , I feel something from it when I didn’t before. Although that’s just me. That was my cup of tea.
I’ve been playing guitar and singing for
thirty five years. The music I create is way different than what I have done to make a living in the live music scene. Most artists work is a reflection of their roots.
Who they studied or who taught them to do what they do.
I cannot really put this Album in a category, Sure I did anyway but feel it isn’t where it needs to be. I built this album from the ground up and did all the voices and instruments myself in a small camper trailer packed with recording equipment, Stayed up many many nights working on these songs till the sun came up , The bird sounds on the beginning of Dance In The Light were actual morning birds I recorded at 5:30 AM outside the camper as I was getting ready for bed.
In such a large ocean of Music today I feel anyone who discovers this music was destined to or found that needle in the hay stack.
Stay True.

Goldy McJohn and Friendz

Goldy McJohn & Friendz

There was a time, not so very long ago, that Goldy McJohn had resolved never to play music again.

Nowadays, though, it’s all he wants to do.

“I want to play … every night,” said the former keyboardist for the iconic Sixties rock band Steppenwolf. “I was sick of it. I put the lid down on the piano a long time ago. I said I wasn’t going to play.”

Fortunately for Northwest rock fans, McJohn - disillusioned from years of sniping with former Steppenwolf leader John Kay over royalties and the rights to the band name and catalog - rediscovered his will to make music. He’s launched a new band, Goldy McJohn and Friendz, which will headline a four-band lineup Aug. 30 at MoonDogs Too in downtown Port Orchard.

“I’m chompin’ at the bit,” McJohn said during a recent phone interview from his Burien home. “Everybody’s always said, ‘You have one helluva way of playing an organ.’ I was thinking about that, and I started to get that buzz again, get that feeling. And that’s what I’m on now.”

That buzz was a long time coming - at least with enough intensity to goad McJohn back onto the rock ‘n’ roll stage. Since the mid 1990s, he’d been living in West Seattle, working at the public golf course there and eating into his Social Security.

In recent years, though, he starting gigging - and golfing - with other rock luminaries who had settled in the Puget Sound area, notably Roger Fisher, the guitarist from Heart, and Alan White, the drummer from Yes. Then he met Mason County-based guitar veteran Glen Bui (Eddie Money, Tower of Power, Waylon Jennings and many others), and the two began to talk about making rock ‘n’ roll a full-time pursuit once again for the 63-year-old McJohn.

“I want to make sure this continues,” said McJohn. “We’ve got, I’ll tell you, one of the finest bands - they tickle me pink. All the reviews from fairs and other shows we’ve been doing, they’re like we’re wowing them, kickin’ butt.

“We’ve got so much going all of a sudden, it’s, like, snowballed,” he marveled.

The band - McJohn and Bui, with drummer Jack Rabbit English, bassist Laurie Miller and vocalist Paul Ventura - have been playing an increasingly full schedule of shows at clubs, fairs and private functions. (Guitarist Kent Henry, who was in Steppenwolf for a time and later played in Blues Image, has indicated that he’ll come north from his Portland base to join in at several upcoming shows.) In addition, McJohn and Bui have been writing original material, and the band (in both its present and a couple of past incarnations) have been recording.

“We’ve been working on some of our own originals, and they’re getting better and better,” said McJohn. Among the recent tracks is a remake of Steppenwolf’s defining hit single, “Born to Be Wild,” which they recorded at Fisher’s Bellevue-area studio.

Another track, “Rock 420″ - written by McJohn, Bui and Tim Holycross - was recorded prior to the current lineup being cemented. It features Holycross on vocals, but is informed by Bui’s bluesy guitar and McJohn’s rich, soulful organ.

That organ, along with Kay’s gravelly vocals and the band’s rough-and-tumble image, made Steppenwolf one of the late 1960s’ most memorable bands. Coming south from their spawning grounds in Toronto, they churned out a string of hard-edged rock hits that included “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Rock Me” before breaking up, reuniting and breaking up again in the first half of the 1970s.

Though Kay has carried on with various incarnations of Steppenwolf ever since, McJohn hasn’t been involved with the band since a short-lived 1977 reformation with Henry and bassist Nick St. Nicholas. He recorded with other artists and joined a post-Peter Frampton version of Humble Pie, touring and becoming friends with the band’s leader, Steve Marriott.

“Steve was my favorite guy to be on the road with; I’ve never been so thrilled about being on the road with somebody, even Steppenwolf,” McJohn said with obvious affection for Marriott, who died in 1991.

The music Goldy McJohn and Friendz play these days is all over the map of McJohn’s extensive career, which also includes a half dozen solo recordings. Besides Steppenwolf hits, he said they’ll do a variety of blues tunes and oldies - and, apparently, requests.

“We were playing the fair on Camano Island (Aug. 2) - the place was packed - and this row of kids shouted to us to play ‘Free Bird’ (the megahit by Lynyrd Skynyrd). I just said, ‘Free Bird?’ OK. Glen, take it away,’ and we did it.”

Goldy McJohn and Friendz will bat clean-up for an afternoon and evening of music at MoonDogs Too, which is a benefit for the South Kitsap Skate Park Association. For a $5 cover, the musical lineup includes Super Heroes in Training (3 p.m.), Snakebite (4:30 p.m.) and Leon Hendrix, brother of Jimi (7 p.m.). McJohn and the Friendz should go on about 9 p.m.

“Yeah, Glen’s on the phone, getting people interested,” McJohn said of the band’s busy schedule. “We want to play fairs, casinos, whatever. There’s a possibility of Japan later in the fall, for a month.”

After all the years of inactivity, it looks like McJohn’s a full-time rocker again.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

Goldy McJohn, left, sported a world-class ‘fro during his days as keyboardist for Steppenwolf.

Back behind the keyboard, McJohn gets by with a little help from his Friendz.
